Not boaters' rubbish

THE rubbish that is causing concern along the Aylesbury Arm by Tesco in the town, has not been deposited by boaters at the nearby moorings.

Local residents have complained at the amount of rubbish along the hedge bordering the canal (No one owns 'grot spot'—4th March), with various parties being blamed, but boater Paul Meaton writes:

Immigrants

If the spot described is the area by Lock 16 just before the Tesco moorings, I can confirm that the rubbish does not come from the boating community. The rubbish is deposited by mainly eastern European immigrants camping out under the bushes. One assumes they are unfortunate enough not to have work or a dwelling and use this area as it is out of the spotlight of council officials/law enforcement officers.

It can be an eyesore which is further compounded by waste from casual customers of both Tesco's and nearby take-away outlets. I would suggest the removal of the waste is the joint responsibility of the Council/Tesco and the various fast food outlets in the vicinity.
