Saved by smoke alarm

ONE boater was 'lucky' when his boat caught fire in respect that it had a working smoke alarm installed, that perhaps saved his life.

He managed to escape from his blazing residential boat, though he needed attention from the paramedics for smoke inhalation, after making an attempt to douse the fire, but realising it was in vain, so calling the emergency number.

Two fire engines

It was at around 10.30pm on Tuesday night that his smoke alarm sounded, and he escaped, with subsequently two fire engines attending the scene at Saul on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

The fire crews spent over an hour getting the blaze under control, with the boat however burnt-out, access being along the towpath
