FOLLOWING my comment about the need for a coat of paint on Stretton Aqueduct I met Brian Holmes at Wheaton Aston, who informed me about it, writes David Hymers.

He told me that the Shropshire Union Canal Society and the local parish council have volunteered to carry out the painting, using paint provided by British Waterways.

Health and safety

However, they have to agree to a number of health and safety restrictions, amongst which is closing the A5 (which runs under the aqueduct). The reason for this is that British Waterways is concerned that a drop of paint might fall onto the windscreen of a car passing underneath and cause an accident. Negotiations are apparently continuing.
