More barriers wanted

ONCE again the death of someone leaving a night club after heavy drinking and falling into a waterway has caused a demand for barriers.

This time however, it is not only barriers but CCTV and lighting that is demanded by Victoria Bridge over the Aire & Calder Navigation in Leeds.  Though there are already railings in place.

Safety campaign

It is the sister of a man who drowned in the waterway after a night out at a party in a city centre nightclub. who wants to start a waterside safety campaign to mark a year after her brother's death.

Robert Stoner,  fell into the waterway near Victoria Bridge after leaving the party after drinking, and his sister wants the message going out to people that they 'need to be aware that the body does not function the same when it's drunk as when it's sober'.

Campaigning

She is campaigning for new barriers, lighting and CCTV to prevent intoxicated people falling into the water.

She is fundraising for a new banner to be placed on the railings at Victoria Bridge, near the stretch of water where Robert died, having held an auction and disco.

Other men who have drowned  in the Aire & Calder Navigation include students Matthew Wilcox and Gavin Terry, both 19, and both after nights out drinking.
