THE public had the opportunity to inspect the working of Bingley Five Rise Locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal yesterday (Sunday) as it was drained for repair.
Gates are being replaced on the structure, and British Waterways tell that 'about 3,500 people visited the locks on Saturday'. The photograph shows recently replaced gates at the Five Rise.
Amazed
The people that viewed the locks and were allowed down into the chambers were amazed at their complexity. This year British Waterways has 'opened' a number of locks to the public where gates are being replaced, to show that maintenance is taking place.
A spokesman told that '200 sets of lock gates will be replaced over the winter.
