Bridge is worse than expected

VICTORIA Bridge over the Avon at Bath, where boating has been banned, is in worse condition than expected.

Following a further inspection by independent structural engineers it has been found that there is further deterioration in the condition of the bridge.

Further deterioration

The recent inspection showed further deterioration of the structure, particularly one of the central hangers, that is considered a serious issue.

In view of this, paths on both sides of the river under the bridge will now remain closed, and boats will not be allowed to pass underneath until repairs are undertaken.

Emergency work

Emergency work to prop up the bridge has now been completed, and straps are being made to support the structure, that will be installed this week.

However, this work will still not allow either the paths to be reopened or the river to be made available to boat traffic, as the bridge will still be deemed unsafe. Later this year it is hoped to construct temporary support for the bridge, and eventually complete permanent restoration, but this will not be for two years—the winter of 2013.
