THE section of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal that goes under Sellers Works in Huddersfield looks set to be opened up with the news that a development has been awarded.

Kirklees Council has awarded a £2m contract to undertake preparatory and landscaping works on a three acres site along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal for commercial development that will start next year.

Opening-up tunnel

The development will include opening-up the tunnel that at present takes the waterway under buildings, and the creation of a new lock in place of the one that was built when the waterway was restored. The photograph shows the building of the tunnel when the canal was restored, that will again be opened-up, with the new lock at its lower end to raise the water level, making it more attractive.

A towpath, that at present is non-existent, will also be  constructed along the exposed waterway, with the final stage of the development being the creation of flats on land overlooking the new upgraded canal, named the Waterfront Quarter.
