Longer hours of power at Thames locks

Published: Monday, 06 June 2011

THE Environment Agency is testing the implications of extending the hours of public power at many of its powered locks on the Thames.

The locks at  Marlow, Temple (pictured), Hurley, Hambleden and Marsh and Molesey, Sunbury, Shepperton, Chertsey and Penton Hook will still have power for boater operation overnight whilst the lock keeper is off duty, Alan Tilbury reveals.

End of August

The trial will run until the end of August, and is the result of customer representatives telling the agency there is demand for overnight public power, and the trial is to gauge the benefit, popularity and any issues arising from this service.

After this three month trial, the Environment Agency will evaluate the feedback and consider any issues arising and decide whether to extend overnight power to all of the hydraulic locks on the Thames.
