Selling off British Waterways property

THE online petition to the prime minister concerning the selling-off of British Waterways property was not well supported.

The petition by Ian Rees 'We urge the Government to allow British Waterways to retain its property portfolio, protecting its essential source of revenue and ensure the sustainability of its work', received just 22,310 signatures.

Sell-off of properties

The petition went on to point out that further to recent announcements concerning the potential sell-off by the Treasury of properties owned by British Waterways, we petition the prime minister to give assurances that our canals will be protected and recent levels of investement, a credit to Labour, be maintained'.

Many boaters feel that British Waterways mishandles its property portfolio, going into such as the pub business and shopping malls that together cost it £99 millions with just two ventures.
