Overnight lock repairs

Published: Friday, 23 April 2010

SUCH was the leakage at Wychnor Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal that it was closed last night (Thursday) to undertake urgent repair.

It was our Ralph Freeman who pointed out the long delays caused by the leaking gates taking a long time to fill, so it was closed last night, and should be open again today.

The closure was to allow repair work to take place on the bottom gates and cill. For some time the bottom gates/cill have been leaking badly and consequently the lock has become very slow to fill.

This is not helpful on this busy stretch of canal, writes Ralph.

BW Engineering staff hope to replace the facings on the gates and the cill liners overnight, and have the lock operational again on Friday morning. This photograph was taken at approximately 8pm Thursday evening.
