THERE ARE CONCERNS from boaters of a possible breach at Nantwich on the Shropshire Union Canal.
As a result work is to be undertaken at the site in the winter months, Janet Friend reports.
Develop into a breach
The worry is that there is leakage between bridges 92 and Nantwich Aqueduct that may develop into a breach.
Boaters tell that water is leaking from the canal with one boaters telling he has been monitoring the the section and is concerned of a possible breach on the Nantwich Aqueduct as the embankment structures are leaning away with the towpath now sinking.
There is also the worry that should there be a sudden water loss the floodgates protecting the aqueduct that should close automatically are locked open, and therefore unable to be closed to prevent water loss.
Start work after Christmas
However the Canal & River Trust state that work will start after Christmas at the site reconstructing part of the embankment around the area of the culvert and reinstating the canal bed, over the culvert, as part of its annual winter works programme.
It being understood that the culvert is the problem causing the leakage from the waterway.
