THE COUPLE WHO THREW their dog into a canal have been given a ten years ban on keeping animals.

They slung their elderly dog in a plastic bag into the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Janet Friend reports.

Captured on CCTV

The result was that Terrence Boyd and his wife Sadie Boyd were handed a ten years ban on keeping animals by Burnley Magistrates Court after the incident was  captured on CCTV carrying their terrier Maddie in a black bin bag. There were also other animals in poor condition in their house.

Maddie was taken to the canal near their home in Brierfield, where they threw her into the water.

But a dog walker saw them throw Maddie into the canal, but when questioned the couple said it only contained clothes, but when she poked her head out of the bag a walker jumped into the canal and rescued her.

Arrested

It was also discovered that Maddie was microchipped to Sadie Boyle’s address and so the couple were arrested at their home on suspicion of animal welfare offences.

The police also noticed seven underweight kittens that were taken from the property because of welfare concerns, and later found homes by the RSPCA.

Magistrates were told the house had large piles of pet faeces seen upstairs with mice running around the kitchen. There was also a snake that was not properly kept.

The vet who treated Maddie told she was severely malnourished, with significant muscle atrophy.
