WORK WILL START SHORTLY to install bridges over seven weirs on the Rochdale Canal.

HudersfieldPennineThis is as part of a scheme to improve towpath access, Janet Friend reports.

These 5ft bridges are to be installed between Todmorden and Luddendenfoot with £400,000 from Active Travel England funding for the work, secured by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Including boaters

It is told that these bridges would not only improve accessibility but allow people, including boaters, to cross the weirs safely.

These are to be installed in phases starting with the two at Luddendenfoot weir and Stubbing weir in Hebden Bridge.

Work has started to get rid of all the vegetation that has grown, then the deck boards will be transported to the various site by Canal & River Trust workboat, and then assembled on site.
