IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED that around 1,000 fish have been killed on the Kennet & Avon Canal.
This occurred in Devizes, Janet Friend reports.
The dead fish were rising to the surface with others gasping for air.
Nearly a mile of canal
Nearly a mile of the canal was affected, but Canal & River Trust believe it was a 'one off' incident, with the source of pollution now stopped—though not alerted what this was.
The Environment Agency is working to raise oxygen levels in the water and is investigating the cause, with aerators on site and more on their way, which will raise oxygen levels in the water in an attempt to prevent further fish deaths.
