'There are lies, dammed lies and statistics' is a phrase was popularized in the United States by Mark Twain (among others), writes Bill Ridgeway.
I am tempted to assume this also applies to CaRT.
It is reported that 'Shipton Lift Bridge on the Oxford Canal failed on the 15th December, and we were told it was damaged by vandals knocking it off its mountings! We (unattributed) understand the delay was due to a crane being needed to secure the bridge back on its mountings'.
It occurs to me that if a crane is required to lift the bridge back on its mountings it would require something like a crane to lift it off its mountings in the first place.
That's not a piece of kit with which vandals go roaming the countryside. It was, more than likely, a targeted act—by whom I venture to ask. Alternatively the failure was simply due to lack of maintenance and we all know who is responsible for that!.
