THE BURST WATER MAIN at Breward Bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal is not affecting navigation.

With it being near to the canal it was thought its repair would stop navigation, but this is not so, Keith Gudgin reports.

The last water main burst was on the 14th August under the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Wigan, this taking well over a month to repair.

But this burst main is not under the canal but on the side of the bridge so will not affect the waterway.

Discovered it was safe

It was when the trust's engineers visited the site and assessed the situation they discovered that it was safe to reopen the canal, as the damage to the bridge is located well away from the bridge arch.

However the towpath will remain closed as water is gushing out of the pipe over the towpath. In view of the damage away from the arch it is not expected there will be any navigation closure.
