THIEVES BROKE INTO the Café at Coventry Basin on Monday morning.

But they were thwarted by its security system, Roger Fox reports.

So the would-be thieves achieved nothing by their break-in at the premises, as they made a hasty retreat.

The police have now launched an investigation into the would-be attempt after being alerted by the management of the Playwrights Café at the Coventry Canal Basin.

The management were alerted to the attempt by the property's security system, and the management alerted the police.

With owner Nicola telling CoventryLive:

Alarm did its job

"They didn’t get anything. The alarm did its job, woke me up. I managed to let them know through the camera system that the police were on the way so they left straight away—they were in the café for only 35 seconds.

"I dialed 999 and the police response was fantastic, they were on site with a dog unit within six minutes of calling. They didn’t manage to catch anybody, but we have them on CCTV though it's very grainy.

The cafe has been a long running part of the basin's food scene for decades, with Nicola keen to point out and express her appreciation for the love and support shown after she announced the venue would be forced to close for the day to get things sorted.
