THE RECENT WATER INFLOW into the Trent & Mersey Canal, means that a section can now be reopened.

This is between locks 41 and 71 Keith Gudgin reports. And includes the entire Heartbreak Hill between Kidsgrove and Middlewich.

But should the conditions change the section may have to close sections at short notice.

The flights that were closed in May on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal are being reopened, from locks 21 to 85.

With Bank Newton Locks (41 to 36) open from 10am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm.

But the lock flights between Bingley and Leeds will remain closed, due to the accumulation of weed and the growth of reed beds during the long period of closure.

Weeds will be cleared at Bingley and work downstream with the canal re-opening in stages as weed and reeds are removed, but is expected to take several weeks.
