Goods by boat

A MANUFACTURER of door furniture has 'commissioned  a freight narrowboat' to transport goods from Wolverhampton to the Olympics site.

Hoppe (UK) Ltd have a contract to supply door furniture such as handles, hinges, etc, and a spokesman reveals it is taking the 'green' approach to delivering the goods.

Managing Director, Keith Holt remarks:

"Contractors working on the construction of the buildings that will be used in the Olympic Games are keen to support environmentally-friendly and sustainable logistics strategies adopted by sub-contractors and suppliers."

Staffs & Worcs Canal

In this case however, his warehouse is situated by the side of the Staffs & Worcs Canal at Wolverhampton, and so can easily access the waterways.

As to the route, it is stated:

'The 70ft long narrowboat will transport products via the Birmingham Canal network onto the Grand Union Canal towards London, where the boat will then travel via the Regent/Islington and Venice canals to East London before taking goods into the Olympic site'. [Their words!]
