Body discovered in Rochdale Canal

THE NAVIGATION WAS stopped and the towpath cordoned off after a body was discovered in the Rochdale Canal.

This was at Miles Platting at 10.30am on Friday, Janet Friend reports.

A towpath walker saw the body and rang 999 to alert the emergency services, with the police and firefighters quickly attending.

Pronounced dead

They discovered it was a man who had lost his life in the canal. The man was removed from the canal and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inquiries are progressing, but we are told there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

The navigation has now reopened and the towpath is open again.
