Lack of water keeps navigations closed
THERE ARE AT least three navigations that look unlikely to be open for the Easter holidays through lack of water.
And of course the start of the boating season, Keith Gudgin reports.
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is showing 'little improvement' in the water levels in the pounds from 1E to 42E, even though a pump has been installed.
Suffering water shortage
The Rochdale Canal too is suffering water shortage and once again 'water levels have not improved' meaning that navigation is not possible, again over many pounds, from locks 1 to 24.
So it will be next week after the holidays that it will again be inspected.
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal had a blown cill way back on the 17th December, with all we were told is 'between Newlay and Kirkstall lock, the intermediate top chamber gate cill has blown'.
Now, four months later, it has at last been repaired, but alas not yet enough water to open the navigation.
