Morris' Lift Bridge on the Llangollen Canal
THE AMOUNT of time this bridge will be closed for a repair is ridiculous, writes Amy Dickerson.
It was closed last Monday and chained up on Tuesday. There were two notices with no explanation of what the problem was.
Not good enough
The notice today states that contractors are turning up next Monday to assess the problem. This means they are giving themselves a further week to repair the bridge. This is not good enough CRT. Boaters are stuck here for up to two weeks.
There are no facilities here. There are no buses or shops. My feelings are that CRT should hand the waterways back to the government, since they, CRT, are guilty of mismanaging our waterways. They have ignored the navigation and wasted enormous sums of our money on middle management.
You couldn't make it up
The boaters' grapevine works better than CRT at keeping us informed. The problem appears to be a broken bolt. Do CRT stock spares? Apparently not. It is going to take them at least a week to get one made. You couldn’t make it up.
I am waiting to get away from here. Am off back to the Gloucester & Sharpness. I intend to take my time, no doubt CRT will help in extending my time travelling given their lack of maintenance and upkeep of our canals and rivers.
