Emergency to keep Soar from flooding Leicester Section

EMERGENCY work is taking place to prevent the Soar flooding into the Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal.

It is between locks 37 and 38  at Aylestone in Leicester where the river and canal come close that there is the possibility these days of the Soar overflowing its banks to allow its water into the canal, as many boaters will have noticed how close are the two waterways.

And not only would the river flood the canal but nearby houses are also at risk from flooding in these days of heavy downpours.

The Rothen Group of engineers are undertaking the work by the use of a digger fixed onto a pontoon and using barges to move material to strengthen the river bank.

The recent downpours have eroded the bank and it is thought that unless work is done to strengthen, both the canal and houses would be at risk.

The Rothen Engineering Group is branching out as it took over Fazeley Mill Marina in August.
