Three stoppages yesterday, Thursday
THERE were three stoppages yesterday, Thursday, making it nine already this month.
Peak Forest Canal
One of the stoppages was on the Marple Flight on the Peak Forest Canal yet again, Keith Gudgin reports.
It was closed until further notice as a 'large hole' had appeared at Lock 14 on the flight.
Canal & River Trust engineers have inspected the hole after it was reported by a boater and have closed the flight for safety reasons whilst inspections take place.
This closure will allow the engineers to fixed barriers then lower the water level enabling them to take a closer look at the situation.
Kennet & Avon Canal
The second closure is on the Kennet & Avon at Harris Lock 16 at Semington.
This time we are told it is to facilitate the ongoing work at Semington pumping station, The lock was closed yesterday afternoon. and is to be reviewed on a daily basis.
It is not told however how this affects its possible opening.
Leeds & Liverpool Canal
It's the Wigan Flight on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal that is closed once again.
We are told the stoppage is required to rebuild the collapsed section of wash wall beneath the by-wash outlet to prevent further collapse.
The work is on two Locks—Lock 75 and Lock 77.
For Health and Safety reasons the flight will be closed from lock 65 through to lock 85.
