A TOWPATH covered in puddles and sludge when it rains is frustrating would-be visitors in Aspley.

For £80,000 given for its improvement to Dacorum Borough Council for towpath improvements has not been used, with the towpath a mess with the puddles and potholes, Janet Friend reports.

Visitors to the towpath of a stretch of the Grand Union Canal are worried that the money will be used for other purposes and not for the repair of the towpath.

Additional funding needed

Canal & River Trust maintain that additional funding was needed for an upgrade, but the council state it needed a fully costed project plan before the funds could be released.

It was in January 2019, Dacorum Borough Council received money from the home builders responsible for the Frogmore Road development for towpath improvements, under a legal Section 106 agreement.

But no 'fully costed project plan' has been received.

Residents tell that the towpath has ben in decline for 20 years.
