Lancaster Aqueduct breached

THERE has been a breach on Hollowforth Aqueduct on the Lancaster Canal.

The resulting low water having closed the navigation, Keith Gudgin reports.

Hollowforth AqueductjpgDams have now been put in place and there was a fish rescue before the area was drained.

Containing the water

The problem is there needs to be a method of containing the water supply to both sides of the breach to keep the canal in water, and the landowners owning the property at each side of the waterway have to be contacted to give permission for access.

The Canal & River Trust tell that 'Currently, it is extremely difficult to provide a reopening date for the canal due to the numerous factors we need to investigate'.

The navigation is now closed between Moons Bridge 36 and Hepgreave Bridge 39 owing to the failure and the towpath is also closed.
