A RECENT CaRT notice about Lock 20, Woodend Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal caused me to consider what requires emergency work rather than urgent work, writes Roger Fox.

wood endThe notice states that the lock is very slow to drain meaning that boats are having to queue for a considerable amount of time.

What is going on?

Emergency works are required. That sounds good until you look carefully at the notice to see that it is dated 25th September and that the work will not be undertaken until Tuesday 10th October. What is going on?

Has CaRT lost all sense of urgency? By 10th October the queue will be all the way to Fradley Junction.

Since I wrote earlier another stoppage notice has arrived with a similar message.

This time it is at Curdworth Lock 5. Another similar paddle problem causing long delays

Clearly this is even more urgent than Woodend as the repairs are not scheduled until 27/28 NOVEMBER

We are thanked for our patience pending this vital repair.  Who is kidding who?
