Collapsed bridge closes Paddington Arm

Published: Monday, 20 March 2023

A COLLAPSED footbridge has closed the Paddington Arm to navigation at Northolt.

BridgeCollapsedThe wooden structure over the waterway broke in two on Friday, Keith Gudgin reports.

It closed both the navigation for boats and the way over the canal for pedestrians.

Third party structure

It being a third party structure means that its removal is out of the hands of Canal & River Trust and is the responsibility of the local authority.

The trust tell that the local authority is determining how the bridge can be removed.  Photograph courtesy of A Yates.

ADDED:

This footbridge was originally built entirely of wood, writes Roger Fox. Following an arson attack some years ago, strengthening steel was added, but the bridge has never been loved by the local authority.

I know nothing of the collapse, but the picture in narrowboatworld today shows a fence closing the bridge to users. Maybe someone knew it was unsafe?
