A much needed overhaul

PART of British Waterways' winter maintenance includes work on the Caldon Canal, with Flint Mill Lock getting new gates.

The old bottom gates have been removed, and  a new top gate is there too, writes Ralph Freeman. The old metal balance beams had been cut up so it will be interesting to see if they are replaced with wooden ones.

It also looks as if they have been doing some pointing up on the side of the lock. It would seem the lock is being given a much needed general overhaul. (As can be seen in his photograph.)
