Warning to keep off frozen canal

THOUGH now more for future freezing spells, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin councils and Ellesmere Town Council have issued pleas to people to stay away from the ice.

The warning comes as children are playing on frozen lakes and the Shropshire Union Canal, despite the tragic deaths of four boys who fell through the ice on a lake, Keith Gudgin reports.

Walk along frozen canal

Ellesmere Town Council posted a report that children and teenagers have been seen trying to walk along the frozen canal and play football on it whilst it is frozen.

A spokesperson told: "It may look solid from the surface but will not hold your weight. Please don’t try to stand on the ice."

There is also a warning to keep dogs off the frozen surface but stick to the towpaths.
