Severn closed for a month

THE poor condition of the locks gates on Bevere Lock (7) on the Severn will close the navigation during October.

At the end of September work will commence to repair the gates of the lock that have dropped on their mountings, but there is evidence that some joints are also failing, resulting in the gates being unable to be moved, Keith Gudgin reports.

Urgent stoppage

Canal & River Trust state that whilst closure at this time is disappointing, it cannot conduct this work in the winter due to the high risk of the site flooding so have elected to 'mobilise an urgent stoppage'.

The gates will be lifted out with the joints plated, mountings repaired and cills replaced. It is expected that this will be completed by early November. [Our thanks to Peter Farnell for correction of our previous wrong dates—Editor.]

The lock is situated below the junction with the Droitwich Canal.
