A NEW marina has opened on the Avon in Stratford.

Aptly named Shakespeare Marina it is situated on the Avon near the Seven Meadows Road bridge, officially opening after many years of planning, Roger Fox reports.

ShakespeareMarinaAvon Navigation Trust

The 250 berth marina will be administered by the Avon Navigation Trust. It was created by developer Geomac Marinas and has welcomed its first boat.

The marina will serve boaters passing through the heart of England, via a mixture of canals and rivers, as part of the Avon ring. The ring provides passage through Evesham, Tewkesbury, Worcester and Birmingham as well as access to the national network.

Situated just a 10 minutes walk from the town its facilities include a shower block with a laundry, a service quay with fuel and pump-out, plus service pedestals for water and electricity for each berth.

Floating jetties

Being on a river it has floating jetties together with non-slip decking for safety.

Unusually, the marina is split into zones, being named after Shakespearean characters such as Cleopatra, King Lear and Othello.

The marina has been a long time in its completion with planning permission given 15 years ago.
