Kennet & Avon closed again

THE Kennet & Avon Canal is closed again for the second time this month.
This time Hamstead Lock (8) became unworkable on Saturday Keith Gudgin reports.
Impossible to move gate
Boaters discovered that the bottom lock gates were leaking so much it was impossible to get enough water in the lock to get it level, and it was impossible to move the top gate to open it by one person.
Canal & river Trust had little option but to close the navigation until someone could get to it, that it hopes to do today, Monday. Hampstead Lock also failed in October of last year when a collar on one of its gates snapped putting the lock out of action.

A team has investigated the problem this morning, Monday, but it has not been sorted, so the navigation is still closed.
