THE tree that toppled into the Ashton Canal will take two weeks to remove.

Canal & River Trust have admitted defeat at getting it out quickly having to resort to two cranes to lift it out of the waterway, Keith Gudgin reports.

The organising of such together with the necessary road closure while the work take place with a nearby railway adding to the mix, means this will all take time.

The need for two cranes is to safeguard the structure of the canal, giving more control as the tree is lifted out of the waterway.

It is expected the work will be undertaken in the evening of a week-end period to minimise disruption, with the provisional date of Saturday 28 August, with both the canal and towpath closed for two weeks.
