More work on Sankey

WORK is to start on the replacement of the fixed Carter House Bridge with a swing bridge on the Sankey Canal.

The fixed bridge has limited headroom, with the plan to replace it with a swing bridge, allowing boat traffic access, and work expected to start later this year.

The Sankey Canal runs from the Mersey at Spike Island at Widnes (pictured)  to St Helens, and was originally 15 miles long before it was taken out of use, but now is being restored by the Sankey Canal Restoration Society.

However, over the years Warrington Anglers Society have laid claim to it, with its Website stating: 'It does not suffer any boat traffic', though it does not seem to mind the moored ones on the short section at Spike Island.
