Five out of the six Trent locks have been closed

OVER the past months five of the six locks on the non-tidal Trent have been out of action.

The current closure of Newark Nether Lock makes in the fifth lock on the river to be closed to navigation, with only Hazelford Lock escaping closure, Keith Gudgin reports.

Lock after lock closed

In addition to lock gate failures, lack of dredging has been the culprit with lock after lock closed to navigation as gates could not be moved owing to the build-up of silt.

Again the reason for the current failure is 'unexpected maintenance fault'.  But as one contributor pointed out as so little maintenance is carried out how can it produce a fault?

This time there is the further reason as 'structure failure'.

What the fault is

Then in telling it is closed, the trust states: The local team will be attending site tomorrow to carry out further investigations to establish exactly what the fault is and what repairs are needed.
