New born baby found in Wyrley & Essington Canal

THE body of a two days old baby boy was yesterday, Thursday, found in Walsall Canal.

The emergency services rushed to its aid, but was pronounced dead at the scene, with a massive search mounted by the police to find its mother, confirming that a towpath walker had discovered the body.

The police confirmed they were desperate to find the mother as she may need urgent medical attention.

Part of the Wyrley & Essington Canal and the surrounding parkland was cordoned off by police following the tragic discovery where the canal passes by Rough Wood Country Park in Walsall, with people walking the towpath being turned back.

Search teams with wetsuits were at the scene to search the waterway.

Warning for boaters

Boaters are being warned by Canal & River Trust not to cruise within a one mile radius of Sneyd Wharf on the Wyrley & Essington Canal where the incident occurred, as a police incident, Keith Gudgin reports.
