Soot Hill not re-opened today after all

Published: Monday, 19 April 2021

THE boaters lined-up in anticipation of the opening of the Soot Hill stoppage today will be disappointed—it's been delayed.

Instead of being reopened today, Monday as published, the stoppage on the Trent & Mersey at Anderton, will not now be open for passage until Wednesday, Keith Gudgin reports.

Not completed

This delay has been caused as the work to clear a navigable channel has still not been completed, as the contractors required the week-end off work.

Testing of a restricted passage through the affected area has proven successful and so it should clear by 10am on Wednesday.

However there are rules as to passage—boats must slow down to 2mph with only one boat allowed to pass through at any one time and must not proceed unaided. Also priority will be given to boats heading from the tunnels to Anderton.

Moorings suspended

With the number of boats held-up by the long stoppage, the visitor moorings at both sides have been suspended to allow mooring for those boats awaiting passage.

This restricted passage will remain under review.
