London Docks 'pipe dream' coming to fruition

IT WAS many years ago that we reported the 'pipe dream' of a development that has now received outline planning permission.

Regional Properties has gained outline planning permission to redevelop Albert Island on the Thames to the east of London City Airport in the Royal Docks, Roger Fox reports.

Several phrases

The scheme has been designed by Haworth Tompkins together with Industrial Architect Ashton Smith and will be delivered in several phases.

The 13ha site will be developed with a major long-term storage building, engineering education hub, double storey warehouse, and boatyard and pier, with full public access to the island again restored with a pedestrian bridge.

Design work for the first building is now taking place with an anticipated start on site in 2022.
