Shroppie stoppages in design stage

Published: Monday, 01 February 2021

THREE of the Shropshire Union Canal stoppages are held up as still in their 'design stage'.

As Victor pointed out, 'design stage' is the latest name of the game in dragging-out repairs to the failing waterways, with it being used for the delays in four stoppages last week.

Prepared their design

The engineers repairing the culvert breach at Bennet's Bridge on the Shropshire Union have at least 'prepared their design for the permanent repair works to the culvert' but it will still take eight to ten weeks before the hole is filled.

The further breach between locks 10 and 11 by Beeston Iron Lock is still in 'design stage' however, and with awkward access there is no telling how long it will take to fill that hole.

Further breach

As to a still further breach on Audlem Flight it would seem this has not yet reached the design stage, but all these breaches on just one waterway doesn't bode too well for the coming season.

Up on the Lancaster Canal CaRT has 'established a design' for the repairs to Whinnyfield Bridge with the contractor making the 'necessary preparations for mobilising site'.

This we are informed work will start in two to three weeks, but no completion dates this time.
