IT WAS in February of last year that one of the Figure of Three locks was virtually wiped away by Storm Clara.

It was not until August that Keir started work on their rebuilding of the two locks that form the Figure of Three on the Calder & Hebble NavigationKeith Gudgin reports.

This was of course interrupted by the pandemic of the coronavirus, but work is now progressing well

As can be seen from the photograph the two locks were left in a sorry state indeed, requiring completely rebuilding, with the work now underway.

On site work is progressing well with steel fixing and concreting works to the new lock island and new bywash the priority.

Assisted passage

Though there is as yet no advice concerning the opening of the locks the trust anticipates that it will shortly be in a position to advise of dates and times when assisted passage will be available.

The closure resulted in no access between either the Rochdale or Huddersfield canals and the Aire & Calder, Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation or the Trent for a year.
