Aire & Calder plastic clean-up

Published: Friday, 13 April 2018

THE area between River Lock and Hunslet on the Aire & Calder Navigation had become an eyesore for plastic in the water, but volunteers have now cleaned it up.

Local residents joined with volunteers to clear the massive amount of plastic that had gathered in the river under the direction of Canal & River Trust.

Aire plasticGreat residue of plastic

The entire river between River Lock in Leeds and Hunslet had become one great residue of plastic, so the volunteers took to the water, some in canoes, to get rid of the plastic both from the water and the plastic bottles that had been discarded on the towpath.

Altogether over 60 big bags of plastic were collected from area, a great deal of it plastic containers that had been thoughtlessly discarded into the river and towpath.

Need doing all over again

Alas, before too long the uncaring litter louts of Leeds will again strew their litter into the river and towpath, and it will need doing all over again.
