Explore Derwent Mouth Lock

WHILST work has stopped on the repairs to the lock chamber and gate of Derwent Mouth Lock this coming weekend, it will be open for the public to explore.

Derwent Lock fencing2The steps and walkways into the lock that connects the Trent & Mersey Canal with the Trent are now in place for the public, and no doubt boaters, to go into the lock to discover its workings. As the picture shows there is no shortage of safety fencing!

Engineers on hand

The lock will be 'open' on Sunday from 10am until late afternoon and engineers will be on hand to take groups down into the lock and explain what it is all about.

However, with it being somewhat isolated the nearest car parking is either at Wilne Road in Shardlow or at Sawley Marina, both a good mile walk along towpaths. The Shardlow parking being the easiest, as from Sawley it means crossing a busy road and walking up a rough river towpath then a detour over the new bridge to get to the lock.
