Stort closed when season starts

WITH problems with the repairs to Brick Lock 14 on the Stort Navigation, the waterway will not be open in time for the start of the season.

The lock has been closed since the 4th January for reconstruction of the chamber wall, but has proved a bigger job than first thought, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Not as anticipated

It was discovered that the wall that was being replaced was not constructed as anticipated, needing much more of it to be removed.

The engineers then found that its foundations were not as stable as first thought, so had to be re-designed and will have to be rebuilt.

Opened end of the month

This means that instead of the work being completed by the beginning of March, the extra work will mean the lock will not be re-opened until the end of the month, but at least boaters in Roydon Mill Marina will be able to cruise as the stoppage is upstream of the marina.
