Tidal trips must be well planned
I HAVE just read the two articles, on the Ribble Link and the Trent, and while I have to agree with everything that was said I do hope it doesn't put people off ever trying tidal waters, writes Jenny MacGillivray.
We have cruised every bit of tidal water in the system, and a few that aren't usually included such as the Wash, the Thames down to Gravesend and have just come down from Sharpness to Bristol. We have thoroughly enjoyed them all.
Choose a suitable tide
Having said that we are not foolhardy, all our trips have been planned well in advance, we choose a suitable tide and are prepared to wait until conditions are right. We take advantage of local knowledge, and 'big' trips in the company of at least one other boat, a buddy boat is very reassuring!
We carry charts and employ a pilot when necessary, we have VHF, life jackets, life rings and mobile phones fully charged.
We enjoy the challenge of something a bit different, but if you think all that is a bit too much bother, then don't do it, you put not only yourself at risk , but also the people who come to your aid.
