THE Wey & Arun Canal Trust has reached an agreement with the National Trust to lease land to enable part of the northern section of the waterway to be restored.

The National Trust land is situated between the Wey and Stonebridge on the A281 in Shalford, near Guildford, Surrey, and will be leased to the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT).

Step forward

For the Wey & Aun Canal Trust, this is a significant step forward to initiate its local objective of re-establishing the northern section of the Wey & Arun Canal.

The land concerned, ‘Gun's Mouth Island', is shortly to be the focus of WACT's activities at the North end of the canal. These activities will initially involve preliminary surveys and site investigations to enable plans for a landing stage to be prepared for approval.

Sally Schupke, Chairman of WACT, related:

"We are delighted that the National Trust has been able to support us by this truly significant action, which will enable work to commence on the ground in Shalford in the near future."
