THE SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION of Burghfield Lock 103 has shown a gate severely damaged.
This is below the waterline Keith Gudgin reports.
The result is that the repair is not straightforward and could require dewatering of the lock on the Kennet & Avon Canal.
It was on the 17th January that it was discovered that a lock gate would not seal and the navigation was closed.
Below the waterline
Then a subsequent inspection revealed that the gate was severely damaged below the waterline. As a result, we are told the repair is not straightforward and is likely to require the dewatering of the lock.
The trust's engineering and construction teams are still currently assessing feasible repair options.
When this has been decided, so that a repair can be carried out, then information will be given as to a possible timescale for the lock being reopened.
