Grand Union Canal problems
THE GRAND UNION CANAL is closed at Clitheroe's Lock, Lock 99, at Brentford.
A fault was discovered on the 20th May whereby the level of water in Clitheroe's Lock 99 would not equalise, Keith Gudgin reports.
Up to an hour to equalise
It was taking between 40 minutes to an hour for the water to equalise, and so was closed for inspection. Then on the 24th of June it was discovered that there were three letterbox size holes in the cill.
So of course this required stop planks to be installed to carry out a repair and the lock closed.
It was discovered that due to the complexity of the failure the trust tell that it is 'currently working hard to create a permanent design solution to ensure the lock is in operation as fast as possible but also that will be lasting'. Major works will recommence as soon as is possible.
Other problems on the Grand Union
Itchington Bottom Lock 13 is closed as the planned reopening has had to be extended due to obtaining materials.
Current restrictions apply at Locks 55-46, Locks 39, 40 & 45, Lock 29 & 22, Berkhamsted to Fenny Stratford.
There is a future restriction on the Grand Union at Hatton Locks 36 to Lock 46.
