Leeds & Liverpool leaking lock to be fixed whilst navigation closed
A BADLY LEAKING LOCK on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is to be fixed as the canal is already closed.
Oddy Top Lock 5 had been considered for repair for causing water loss. Keith Gudgin reports.
Canal & River Trust tell that the gates condition has deteriorated further and the water loss has been such that it has had to feed water into the upstream pound on a daily basis.
Significant water loss
This water loss is now so significant in relation to the current water resources that this defect is jeopardising the navigability of upstream pounds that currently remain navigable. Photograph by Pennine Waterways
So whilst the canal is either restricted or closed the trust is to act to carry out repairs to the cill and repair the head gates and paddle frames.
It is estimated this will take three weeks, so from Monday (of course) the 23rd June the navigation will be closed to navigation. though access through River Lock at Leeds into Granary Wharf will remain open.
