Four more stoppages on Tuesday

Published: Wednesday, 11 June 2025

TUESDAY OF THIS WEEK would not have been too good for boaters with four more stoppages.

With the Leeds & Liverpool Canal still suffering the most as Keith Gudgin reports.

NewLaneSwing.jpgIt's New Lane Swing Bridge is out of use with problems with its barrier.

Lack of water

And lack of water between locks 85 and 86 closing the navigation, with the excuse given as paddles left open. But we know what that really means, as Howard pointed out, showing the badly leaking lock gates on the Grand Union summit that supposedly had its paddles left open!

Then it is the Oxford Canal that was closed with the bottom gate balance beam broken on Grant's Lock 30 and boaters blamed, but how on earth they can break the actual balance beam is obviously not stated!

Then we are informed that 'essential work, is to be carried out on locks 3, 4, 6, 9, and 14 of the Aylesbury Arm to preserve water levels as well as replacing the gates at lock 12 over the coming weeks.  That doesn't look too good for boaters.

Body in canal

There was a closure yesterday, Tuesday, of the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal at Bacon Lane Bridge 8.  But this is due to a 'police crime' of a body being discovered in the canal and the police closing the towpath and waterway at the bridge.

The police are treating this death as 'unexplained' and are making various lines of enquiry.
